SmallHD Previews Redrock Micro Mission Control App & Teradek Integrated Directors Monitor at Cine Gear Expo 2017
An interview from the 2017 Cine Gear Expo at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles with Dale Backus of SmallHD. SmallHD has made a name as the leading innovator of on-camera monitoring solutions for professional cinematographers, videographers, and photographers worldwide. Creators of the world’s first high definition on-camera monitor, SmallHD continues to push the envelope of what’s possible in an on-camera display by combining advanced cutting-edge technology with accessible pricing. In this interview Dale talks with us about the new FOCUS touchscreen on camera monitor, their UltraBright HDR Monitors, and their collaboration with Redrock Micro's Mission Control App.
The FOCUS is SmallHD's first touchscreen HD video monitor, the FOCUS. For use with small, low profile camera setups, the 5-inch FOCUS provides daylight visibility and an out-of-the-box mounting solution for under $500. The FOCUS has a daylight-viewable 800 nit display, which is sharp enough to achieve critical focus and bright enough to be used outdoors. The lightweight FOCUS attaches securely atop the camera via shoe mount with the included Tilt Arm. With 180 degrees of vertical rotation, the Tilt Arm allows run-and-gun shooters to make quick, smooth monitor adjustments. Included on the FOCUS’ mount is an extra shoe mount for accessories like microphones and video lights.
Along with the included Tilt Arm, DSLR and mirrorless camera users will benefit from the FOCUS’ ability to pass through power to the camera. With a center-mounted Sony L Series battery, the FOCUS can power small format cameras like the Sony Alpha series with its auxiliary power out and camera specific battery adapter cables. This means 2-3 times the camera battery life and fewer batteries to carry, while enjoying a daylight viewable display in the field.
SmallHD introduces the new 5-inch and 7-inch UltraBright monitors with breakthrough viewing in full sunlight. The 503 displays a bright 2200-nits while the 703 displays 2500-nits. These on-camera monitors feature a 10-bit, 1920×1080 IPS LCD optically bonded Gorilla Glass screen with LEMO power and both the 503 and 703 UltraBrights offer HDR Preview. For more accurate onset exposure adjustment, users may select Camera Input Gamma in the settings menu and individually tweak footage white point and black point via data values in the form of a histogram.
Additionally shown is a preview of a new Wireless Directors Monitor, an integration with Teradek's Wireless Bolt Receivers & the SmallHD 703 UltraBright. The Director's Monitor is currently being designed to be configurable to whichever Bolt Receiver you are using, with plans to ship later in the year.
