An interview from the 2015 National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas with Peter Crithary of Sony Electronics. Sony Electronics is a leading provider of audio/video electronics and information technology products for the consumer and professional markets. In this interview Peter talks with us about High Dynamic Range with the Sony F65 & BVM X300 4K Monitor.

Sony’s F65 and F55 CineAlta™ cameras deliver a color gamut wider than that of print film, and a wide dynamic range (14 stops) that faithfully captures light and dark areas with minimal white clip and black crush. Now, for the first time, there is also a monitor available that can fully display the outstanding capabilities of these cameras – Sony’s new BVM-X300 4K OLED master monitor which launched in February. One of the reasons it received a ProductionHUB Award of Excellence, is because it uses a unique wide color gamut OLED panel and an original color management system to deliver truly high brightness, high contrast, and a wide color gamut, all at 4K (4096 × 2160) resolution.

Sony's BVM-X300 30-inch 4K OLED master monitor – is the flagship model in its professional monitor line-up. This new monitor offers the inherent performance of TRIMASTER ELTM OLED monitors, including unparalleled black performance, color reproduction, quick pixel response, and industry-leading wide viewing angles.
In addition, the BVM-X300 supports High Dynamic Range mode and a wide color gamut conforming to DCI-P3 and most of the ITU-R BT.2020. By unleashing these superb features and qualities, this master monitor makes an ideal tool for a wide range of applications such as color grading and QC (quality control) in the 4K production workflow.

Sony’s High Dynamic Range mastering process consists of a combination of high brightness, high contrast, wide color gamut, and high resolution.

Peter also showcases an NAB exclusive, The PMW-PZ1 4K SxS memory player, which is a high-quality and cost-effective playback solution for 4K shooting and post production applications. The PMW-PZ1 features multi-format playback capability for 4K (including 59.94p, 50p, 29.97p, 25p, 23.98p and 24p*), QFHD and HD, supporting a wide variety of formats. These include XAVC Intra and XAVC Long, XAVC S-Long*, MPEG HD422* and MPEG HD*. This combination of versatile interfaces enables seamless playback, copying and monitoring of 4K and HD video across a diverse range of applications, from location shoots to post production to video walls.
