Panasonic USA - CCW 2014
An interview from the 2014 Content & Communications World Expo in New York City with Michael Bergeron of Panasonic USA. Panasonic is a manufacturer of a wide range of high-quality camcorders to meet virtually any application, from Full HD 3D and P2 HD to AVCCAM and SD. In this interview Michael talks with us about the newest VariCam 35 & High Speed (HS) Cameras.
The new VariCam 35 has 14+ stops of latitude and offers a wide dynamic range and color gamut approaching film cameras. The VariCam 35 is equipped with a full-size 4K image sensor. Drawing on the field angle and field depth of the PL lens, this model records video in 4K resolution. The VariCam 35 is equipped with the super 35mm format full-size single-chip MOS sensor developed especially for this new model. It offers 4K (4096 x 2160) and UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution, and boasts high sensitivity, low noise, wide dynamic range and cinematic depth of field.
The VariCam 35 is provided with two independent recorders. This feature lets you record in two different formats, codecs and selectable from V-Log/V-709/Grading which means both an ungraded 4K master and graded HD dailies can be record simultaneously. While having main data for cinema production, HD video for previewing or broadcasting can be acquired. The sub-recorder records HD (AVC-Intra100/AVC-Intra200*1/Apple ProRes*1) together with a lower-rate AVC-Proxy file. All files contain common metadata. By using metadata from the proxy/preview file speedy operation is possible when conducting offline editing.
The 35 has a high-precision internal optical filter made by bonding an optical low-pass filter and IR glass and providing it with a UV/IR-cut coating (membrane). The low-pass filter is tuned for 4K, so it eliminates aliasing and provides optimum resolution. The UV/IR-cut filter prevents ghosts and reddening in dark areas inside the camera unit. For frequently used ND filters, the compact body houses a rotary filter system with four filters (0.6ND, 1.2ND, 1.8ND, CLEAR) for easy switching.
The new VariCam HS has 14 stops of latitude and supports a high frame rate of up to 240 fps, thus achieving dramatic slow-motion effects. The HS also features a 2/3-type 2.2-megapixel 3MOS sensor developed specially for this model. It achieves high sensitivity, low noise and a wide dynamic range.
The VariCam HS is also provided with two independent recorders. This feature lets you record in two different formats, codecs and selectable from V-Log/Grading simultaneously.
Both these cameras are rugged and designed for flexible setup and operation. They allow smooth and unrestricted camera work, letting creators to express their emotions through the images.
This new VariCam series allows color tuning and creating dailies on-site, thanks to the in-camera color grading. In addition, the double-recorder and dual-codec recording function allows simultaneous recording of master and dailies for offline editing and previewing. This streamlines the production process and allows easy linking with network media, revolutionizing conventional moviemaking styles and ushering in next-generation workflows.
