AJA Video Systems - CCW 2014
An interview from the 2014 Content & Communications World Expo in New York City with Tony Cacciarelli of AJA Video Systems. AJA Video Systems is a leading manufacturer of high-quality and cost-effective digital video acquisition, interface, conversion and desktop solutions for professional broadcast, production and post-production. In this interview Tony talks with us about AJA's first digital cinema camera, CION.
The CION, an entirely new professional camera, a first for AJA. CION features an ergonomic design and is capable of shooting at 4K/UltraHD and 2K/HD resolutions. The CION features an APS-C sized 4K CMOS image sensor with an electronic global shutter, 12 stops of dynamic range, and a PL lens mount with manual back focus adjustment. PL mount lenses are the industry standard for cinema and professional production cameras, and are widely available the world-over. In addition, CION’s lens mount has been designed to be removable so third parties may develop mounts for other lens types.
AJA has built the camera’s internal recording around ProRes codecs. You can record video using Apple ProRes 4444 at up to 4K 30fps and 422 codecs at resolutions up to 4K 60fps (4096 x 2160) to AJA’s SSD-based Pak Media Cards. CION enables today’s growing demand for high frame rate support and offers the ability to output 4K raw data at up to 120 fps via 4x 3G-SDI outputs and up to 30 fps over Thunderbolt.
All interface controls are found on the side of the camera facing the operator for each single user operation. The video and audio output cables are also well positioned to not interfere with camera operation. Users will appreciate being able to monitor footage using the integrated LCD screen or external monitors using the HD-SDI and HDMI outputs, which are always active. Another useful feature is the addition of a LAN port, which can be used for remote control via a web browser, as well as ganging CION cameras together for multi-camera shoots.
