Sony FS7 - PhotoPlus Expo 2014
An interview from the 2014 PhotoPlus Expo in New York City with Juan Martinez of Sony Professional. Sony Professional supplies audiovisual and technology solutions to businesses, integrating software and systems to help customers achieve their individual business goals. In this interview Juan talks with us about the highly anticipated Sony PXW-FS7 XDCAM Super 35 Camera System.
The new PXW-FS7 XDCAM Super 35 camcorder combines the flexibility of native E-mount technology, the recording efficiency of the XAVC-L codec; the transfer speed and intelligence of XQD memory cards; and comfortable, handheld ergonomics, including a new “Smart Grip.” The PXW-FS7 was designed as a flexible 4K camera that is at home on productions as diverse as "Cinéma Vérité"-style documentaries, reality TV, commercial and corporate applications. It features a Super 35mm size sensor that allows you to capture images with cinematic depth of field. The camera's E-mount is machined from stainless steel and allows you to use E-mount lenses or with the use of optional adapters to accept most 35mm lenses including PL, EF, Leica, and Nikon. The camera can capture footage to optional on board XQD media cards in either UHD at up to 60 FPS or HD at up to 180 FPS. The camera can also capture 4K (4096 x 2160) images and send the signal out over its SDI or HDMI connectors.
The PXW-FS7 is compatible with Sony´s new XAVC Intra and XAVC Long GOP formats, each supporting 10-bit 4:2:2 recording (XAVC-I, 180fps; XAVC-L, 120fps). Recording in UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution, slow motion up to 60fps and Full High Definition (1920x1080) with 60/50 progressive frames is possible. A firmware update in early 2015 will enable native HD recording in the Apple ProRes HQ 422 codec, when using an optional extension unit (XDCA-FS7).
Another notable set of features include the camera’s 4 built-in ND filters which allow full exposure control in a range of lighting conditions, without requiring external ND filter equipment. Another great feature is the ability to use S- Gamut3/SLog3 & S-Gamut3.Cine/SLog3 which are used for flexibility of post-production options.
