An interview from the 2014 International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam with Kendall Eckman of Blackmagic Design. Blackmagic Design creates the world’s highest quality video editing products, digital film cameras, color correctors, video converters, video monitoring, routers, live production switchers, disk recorders, waveform monitors and real time film scanners for the feature film, post production and television broadcast industries.

In this interview Kendall showcases the Smart Videohub routers, a SmartView HD monitor, the Blackmagic MultiView 16, and talks with us about the PL lens mount options for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera & Production Camera 4K.

Introducing the exciting new Smart Videohub, the world’s first Ultra HD mixed format routers with built in video monitoring and spin knob router control. Smart Videohub includes the latest 6G-SDI technology so you can simultaneously connect and route any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD video all on the same router at the same time. You also get revolutionary new visual routing that lets you see your router connections as video on the built in LCD as you scroll the knob to select your routing. Also included is the Videohub control software which has a great looking interface with amazing icon buttons. When used with new touchscreen PCs, you get a fantastic large screen XY control panel. You can even download the new software control panel for Apple iPad that lets you use it as a fantastic, low cost touch screen router panel.

The SmartView monitors are extremely thin and lightweight, so they are perfect for both broadcast and portable use. SmartView HD features an amazing 17" LCD screen that lets you monitor SD, HD and 3Gb/s SDI video in full resolution HD, and automatically switch between SD, HD and 3G-SDI video formats. Just as impressive is its ultra slim, 6RU rack mountable design. Only an inch thick, it’s the perfect size for all your SDI monitoring needs and can be conveniently adjusted from your computer via Ethernet.

Blackmagic MultiView 16 is the world’s first multi viewer that operates natively in Ultra HD, which allows you to use an Ultra HD monitor or television for twice the image sharpness, even if you are not even using Ultra HD in your facility yet. Now you can connect up to 16 different SD, HD and Ultra HD SDI sources into one display for monitoring. Blackmagic MultiView 16 allows 4, 9 or 16 views to be selected and each input includes a full frame re-synchronizer so you can have any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD SDI sources connected, all at the same time on one display.

Blackmagic Design has also updated their Production Camera 4K and Blackmagic Cinema Camera by adding an option for PL lens mounts. The PL models allow you to use, or even rent, professional cinema lenses from companies such as Panavision, Cooke, ARRI or Zeiss. You can even use vintage PL cinema lenses, which is great because these two cameras are being heavily used on feature films now so it’s great to have models with PL lens mounts.

This means their are now 5 camera models to choose from in this chassis, with 2 different sensors and 3 different lens mounts. This means you can choose from a 4K sensor with 12 stops of dynamic range, global shutter and large Super 35 size, or the 2.5K sensor with 13 stops of dynamic range, rolling shutter but better low light performance. So you can choose the model that’s best for the type of work you need to do.
