Elephone Enters the 4K Action Camera Market

Elephone is a Chinese company established at the end of 2006 that focuses on manufacturing mobile communication devices. Lately, they have announced that they are going to enter the action camera market and their ambition is to create a sports camera that can capture 4K videos. First images of the company’s device were already leaked alongside some specifications.

Elephone has confirmed that the yellow camera, which is designed to look like a SJCAM is going to be called ELE CAM and it will be a 4K action camera. The 16 MP camera will record 4K video, but only at 15 fps, as it is built with an OV4689 sensor and has an Allwinner V3 chipset. If you want better frame rates, the camera records 720p HD video at 120 fps and 1080p video at 60 fps. As for the lens, it comes with a 170 degree wide angle lens, so it can easily compete with other action cameras that are already on the market.

The Elephone action camera does have a built-in Wi-Fi so it can be operated with Android or iOS devices. As the camera is intended for extreme sports, the casing is waterproof and can be easily attached to a helmet. As a new product on the market we expect the ELE CAM to have a cheaper price than other SJCAMs. Nonetheless, the Elephone device seems to be the less pricey alternative to a GoPro, so you should definitely keep your eye on more information that will soon be released.
